Content Area Instruction
Q: How do I identify the long range and short term content objectives?(Cloud, Genesee, Hamayan 2000) page 88
A: Teachers should consider local, state, and national standards established for the discipline. Teachers should also coordinate their work towards instructional standards across languages, setting, and grade levels to ensure continuity of experience for learners.
Q: How can I select materials and adapt curriculum for learners?(Cloud, Genesee, Hamayan 2000) page 120
A: Teachers must have access to varied materials such as books, workbooks, posters, charts, slides, overhead transparencies, models, audiocassette and videocassette tapes, computer software, CD ROMS and Laser Videodisks as available in the target language.
-Materials should have an inviting layout, have many useful illustrations and graphics, should not have an overwhelming amount of text, should be written in a logical and cohesive manner, written at a level that students can read independently, should be free of cultural bias, have a typeface that is easy to decipher.
-Teachers might also need to modify materials by creating a graphic depiction of the text, outline the text/highlight main points, rewrite the text to simplify the language, shorten the amount of reading required, create audiotaped versions of the text, provide live demonstrations to bring text to life, and use alternate books.
Q: How can I plan for evaluation? (Genesee, Hamayan 2000) page 121
A: Teachers must plan to check frequently on students' understanding of the language being used and the concepts being taught during instruction. This assessment could be done orally or through learning logs.
